Jonathan, Dan, and Steve also ran the race. Jotham paced Dan down from the summit.

Sunday morning I woke up feeling good and ready to run. Once the race started, I ran a bit faster than planned on the paved section to get ahead of the pack before the W’s. This worked out well since once the pack hit the W’s I never had trouble passing and not may people passed me. The remainder of the ascent was fairly straight forward. I felt decent most of the way.

Starting at about the 2 miles to go sign, some slushy snow from the previous day’s storm covered the trail. The trail got progressively wetter as the summit neared, but the snow didn’t cause any real slow downs. Towards the top, my legs felt like they could cramp, but didn’t. The last couple miles, I felt like I wanted to go faster, but mentally wasn’t able to push any harder.

After reaching the summit it’s always a nice change to turn around and head down. After a mile or two a couple other runners caught up and we ran together for awhile down through the crowds of runners still heading toward the summit. At tree line one runner from the pack went on ahead and a couple of others had dropped off. I was trying to control a side stitch and couldn’t keep up anymore. I walked through the A-frame aid station drinking as much as possible which left me by myself for the remainder of the descent.

On the descent, I felt better than years past although I was fighting a side stitch most of the way down. I’d get into a rhythm for a half mile or two and then the pain would come back. My leg muscles were starting to complain too. Finally, just after the 2 miles to go mark, my calf muscle cramped and I had to stop and stretch. At that point 3 or 4 runners passed me as I hobbled towards the finish line. It’s always a welcoming site to see the spectators on Ruxton, but that section of road always seems long. Finally the last corner and the finish line came into view and the race was over.

I sat in the medical tent for a bit, and when I got up to leave, quickly realized I couldn’t stand up so I sat back down and had some more Gatorade to drink. After a few more minutes I was able to collect myself and wandered out to watch the other runners finish the race.

Things Done Right:
I decided to not carry any water with me and only depend on aid stations. This strategy worked well. I carried 7 gel packets and ate 5 of them. A season of training at altitude paid off again. After the A-Frame, I don’t remember anyone passing me until the 2 to go mile marker on the descent.

Things Done Wrong:
I decided to carry gloves in my pockets, but even though the weather was cool and cloudy at the top, I ended up not needing them. I gave them to Carol who was waiting for Dan at the top.

Looking at my heart rate splits, I may have started out too fast. This might have contributed to the leg cramping and side stitches I experienced towards the end of the race.

I may have not rested enough earlier in the year. Even after tapering, I didn’t quite have the mental edge to push hard through the tough parts of the race.

Race Goals:
My goal for this race was to beat my time of <st1:time minute="12" hour="17">5:12</st1:time> from last year and if possible to break the 5 hour mark. I succeeded in running a PR for this race (<st1:time minute="7" hour="17">5:07</st1:time>), but will have to wait until next time to break 5 hours.

Splits:
Race this morning. It's a 7.3 mile trail race with 1800' of vertical gain. It's a fun, low key race with about 100 participants. My time was 1:04.23. I was hoping to break 1 hour, but that goal will have to wait until next year.
Things done right:
Pacing up the first hill seemed about right. Definitely hard, but with enough left to push on the rest of the course.

Things done wrong:
I approached this race as a training race and didn't taper as much as I could have. I'm not sure the lack of taper effected my time very much. I felt rested going into the race. It would have been nice to have run the course more recently to have a better feel for what was coming.

Nighthawk

My new guest - a nighthawk who has taken up residence on my balcony railing. Collins Half Marathon

This mother's day, several friends and I ran the Old Town Ft. Collins Half and Full Marathon. I ran the half. Here's my race report with format borrowed from the Incline club.

Race Name: Old town half
Race Location: Ft Collins, CO
Race Date: May 8, 2005
Race Distance: 13.1 miles
My Goal: beat last year's time with a 1:25
My Race Time: 1:24.23

General Summary:
The old town half marathon is run on a fast course that is down hill or flat for most of the way. There is only one moderate hill about 6 miles into the race. Towards the end it seems like there are several hills as the bike path undulates over a bridge and under some streets, but you'd probably not notice these hills unless you were running a marathon.

Things Done Right:
My training over the winter with track and tempo sessions over the past couple of months seems to have paid off. My race morning "breakfast" of a cliff bar and cytomax sat well and gave me plenty of energy during the race.

Things Done Wrong:
I started out faster than my goal pace of 6:30/mile. I probably should have slowed down through the middle aid stations to drink more since I only drank 3 mouthfuls of water during the race.

Any other stuff:
The weather was perfect with a temperature just under 60 degrees with cloud cover. We had a tail wind for most of the course except for a brief section of head wind on the dog leg section.

Mile

Split

Avg HR

Max HR

1

5:59

167

175

2

6:21

177

179

3

6:20

181

189

4

6:14

183

183

5

6:35

187

188

6

6:34

188

189

7

6:18

188

191

8

6:27

190

192

9

6:31

191

192

10

6:29

192

193

11

6:24

195

197

12

6:33

197

196

13

6:42

198

202

.1

:50

201

201

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ericsigler.blogspot.com/2005/05/old-town-ft-collins-half-marathon.html' title='Old Town Ft. Fortunetly, it wasn't long before we got back on the hard packed trail and soon were back to our cars.

Kane Creek, Utah

4 wheel drive lets you go in places where you probably shouldn't be driving.

"I'm pretty sure we don't need that part." The portal trail certainly offers plenty, but my eyes were pretty much glued to the trail. The exposed sections of the trail aren't all that technical, when the trail drops off several hundred feet just to the side of the trail.

I didn't need a sign to tell me to be careful. However, at the end of last season I realized that I was missing out on the truly great part of the Colorado winter – the back country.

This last weekend Dan, Phil, and I decided to do some back country exploring. We had originally planned on a winter attempt of Kit Carson, but after monitoring the avalanche report we decided to stick to something a bit closer to home. Saturday morning we meet up at the Brainard Lake winter trail head with our packs loaded. The temperature was about 20 degrees with a brisk wind blowing. We were prepared and headed off in search of a camp site for the weekend.

A little way up the Mt. Audubon trail we found a sheltered camp site in some trees. Dan and Phil proceeded to setup the tent while I dug out a foundation for my BD MegaLite. The MegaLite is really just a light weight tarp so I was a bit concerned about the amount of shelter it would provided in the winter conditions. I definitely wanted to make sure that it would stay up the whole night. After a good bit of digging, I hit ground about four feet down and was able to get some stakes in the frozen earth. I was counting on the combination of snow walls ant solid stakes to provide shelter throughout the night.

After camp was setup, we headed over to Mitchell Lake to have a look around. The wind and snow constantly change the winter landscape so even with blowing snow in your face, it’s hard to turn back. There’s always a more spectacular view around the next corner.

The sun was quickly setting however, and with our stomachs growling we headed back to camp for the evening. Over dinner and hot drinks we discussed our plans for the next day. We decided that if the winds died down we’d see how far up Audubon we could get.

The next morning I was happy to wake up beneath a still solid shelter. However, the winds were still blowing and the weather didn’t look promising. Since we were so close, we headed up the trail anyway. About tree line, we were hit with blowing snow and intimidating clouds over the summit of Audubon. It wasn’t too hard to come to a consensus to limit our exploring to the relatively sheltered forest. We turned around, packed up camp, and made our way back to the cars.

Long's Peak

I captured this picture of Long's Peak a couple weeks ago.

It sure is windy

This morning, it's definitely windy here in Boulder. Probably the windiest I can remember at my house. Running into work this morning was certainly entertaining.

First off, I got blown off the sidewalk. Then, while I was waiting to cross the diagonal highway I just about got blown over. After crossing the highway, I cut through some of the trails by the reservoir. On 63rd street I started feeling the spray from the water off of the lake. My route takes me along the reservoir dam so I knew it would be interesting. On the turn from 63rd toward the reservoir, I was running pretty hard into the wind but wasn't really making any forward progress.

I finally got up onto the dam and was amazed to see the "storm surge" against the dam. There were 3-4 foot waves crashing against the dam with spray blowing in sheets across the trail. I took off across the dam and really had to concentrate to keep from getting blown off. By the time I got to the other side I was wet, but with the wind it wasn't too big a deal because it dried things out pretty quickly. Luckily after that section I turned and had a full on tail wind. Certainly good fun.

It was pretty impressive to hear the wind whistling through the power lines. I'm glad we have showers at work because there was quite a bit of sand imbedded in my hair by the time I got there.

Welcome

Welcome to my blog.

On occasion, I plan to post accounts of what's been happening around here.
